Picking the right wheels Round 1 Performance

Picking the right wheel isn’t easy, there are loads of options out there. This step by step will help narrow down that list making your decision easier.

First things first is requirements. This sets the stage entirely. A Daily Driver setup that needs to get good gas mileage and have long treadlife will require different criteria then a Autox Only or a Dual Duty (Street/Track) setup. These simple steps apply to all setups that are concerned about performance. I’ll do a separate article for the Form guys as well.

Ask yourself What do I want/need these for?

This is also when you determine tire width, as tire width is the most important aspect of what you plan on using the wheels for. Tire width can be limited by AutoX class, price, availability, or overall height.

Jake’s First AutoX

Everyone meet Jake. He’s a young guy who we’ve been trying to convince to AutoX for years. Finally he started. Here’s Jake’s review of his first event, hopefully Jake will be helping us cover the Susq region SCCA events in the future. 🙂

My first autocross
The day began at 6 A.M. I woke up, got myself ready, and put everything I had prepared in my car. It wasn’t much, but enough to get me through the day

-Cameras
-Tire pressure gauge
-1/2” bar and 19mm socket
-Helmet
-Lunch
-Water

I left at 7 A.M. on half a tank and arrived roughly 35 minutes later. There was a small crowd gathered at that point and the registration table and tent was still being assembled. I unpacked the car and then made my way over. I registered, signed the waiver, grabbed my number, signed up for my work position, and made my way back over to my vehicle. After affixing my number I drove over and passed through tech inspection, everything a-ok.  To my surprise, my co-worker came over and offered to help me out seeing as it was my first time. I wasn’t aware he was coming and am quite thankful as he had some solid advice as we did a walk-through.

EFI Logics Shop Race Car introduction

I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Pete @ EFI Logics located in Bethel Connecticut about their 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STi Racecar.

A friend of mine tagged t3hClap  on an EFI Logics post about cheap race tires. Me being always in the market to reduce my expenditures on tires I shot Pete an Email. Unfortunately they were only looking to sell the tires locally. I did get a chance to ask Pete some questions about their awesome EFI Logics Race Car they’ve been running for a few years now. Below is that little chat. Read on and enjoy a few snap shots. The guys over at EFI Logics know how to build STi’s.

Clap: What is the Year, Make and Model of the EFI Logics Race Car?
Pete@EFI: It’s a 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STi.

Clap: Every EFI car has a name, what’s the Race Cars name?
Pete@EFI: To be clear, Rob, our engine tech names all of his engines so he can keep track of modifications and engine specs – it’s a memory cue for him. This car’s engine’s name is Ari.

The Enkei RS05RR. It comes in 3 different faces and some very nice size options. It’s good to see Enkei come out with an 18×11!!

Ivan’s 2011 STi 18×9.5 +38mm x2

Today we have a new feature on a car that isn’t a GD, but a GR whose owner has an interesting flare all his own. This 2011 World Rally Blue STI sedan is an eye grabber two and three times over. If you see this beast driving by not only do you look back for seconds, sometimes you find yourself guilty of thirds. His name is Ivan Tukhtin, and if the looks of the car don’t catch you then the sound of very loud and typically very Russian music will. Ivan is also quite interested in photography, so rather than shower you with my shots for this feature; we will use all of his own.

Day one started off as normal as it can, for a Subaru owner.

Take a look at the rest of Ivan’s car by hitting MORE.
